Excellent points Blake Harvard! Thanks for your post. There is a great book (in my opinion), A Field Guide To Lies And Statistics, by neuroscientist Daniel Levitin that offers guidance on critical thinking and interpreting numbers/statistics reported everywhere. I wouldn't mind it if everybody skimmed through that book at some point in their life.

Note, I have no affiliation to Daniel Levitin.

Hi Margie, it took some time and effort but it looks like this is the article Alan is referring to is, "Unpacking the career aspirations of Australian school students: towards an evidence base for university equity initiatives in schools". It also looks like it's an open access article (i.e., not behind a paywall) so you should be able to download directly from the publisher's site: http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/07294360.2017.1325847

Hi Mike, thanks for the multiple posts on this topic. Very interesting indeed! I wanted to double check, the Mareschal et al 2007 citation you refer to, is that the two-volume book by Mareschal and colleagues that I've outlined below? Mareschal, D., Johnson, M. H., Sirois, S., Spratling, M., Thomas, M., & Westermann, G. (2007). Neuroconstuctivism: Vol. 1. How the brain Constructs cognition. Oxford, UK Oxford University Press. Mareschal, D., Sirois, S., Westerman, G., & Johnson, M. H. (Eds.) (2007). Neuroconstructivism: Vol. 2. Perspectives and prospects. Oxford, UK: Oxford University Press.

Well spotted Alan. Fantastic to see that some of these "leading UK academics" are also editorial board members for npj Science of Learning, the journal affiliated with this Community!

Some great advice Marie! It's probably something that early career researchers don't think about that much, but important for their career progression and experience in general.
