About Professor Michael O'Neill

I am the Bernie Prindiville Chair of Education at The University of Notre Dame Australia, and I chair the National College of Education across the School’s three campuses. Before my appointment to the School of Education I had over 24 years experience in a wide variety of Catholic secondary schools in middle management and senior management roles. I held the position of Deputy Principal (Curriculum) Head of Secondary and was Acting Principal at a large metropolitan Yr 4–12 school. I held a senior role in the Catholic Education Office of Western Australia as Coordinator of Secondary Curriculum, managing a team of curriculum consultants that provided professional development for teachers and leaders within Catholic schools in WA. I served on several Curriculum Committees of the School Curriculum and Standards Authority of WA. I was a commissioner on the Catholic Education Commission of WA for 6 years. I have also been a ministerial appointment and Vice Chancellors’ of WA nominee to the West Australian College of Teaching (now the Teacher Registration Board of WA). I have interests in English curriculum serving on syllabus and examination committees for a number of years. My research interests include the management of curriculum reform and educational policy and leadership. My doctoral studies focused on school and teacher effectiveness in high-performing Catholic secondary schools in WA. I acted as a consultant in reviewing leadership and professional development programs at the Catholic Education Office of WA and the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL). I have served on a variety of committees at the University of Notre Dame including the Core Curriculum Committee and the Academic Council. I have also been an Assessor for the federal government’s Office of Learning and Teaching (OLT) Awards in higher education.
